Timeline
Karen Karnes was born in New York in 1925. She studied at Brooklyn College and Alfred University. She has exhibited widely in America and this is her second solo exhibition in Britain. She is the recipient of many awards and achievements including the Gold Medal in 1998 from the American Crafts Council. Her work is represented in numerous prestigious museum collections, including the American Craft Museum, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum. In 2007 her work was exhibited at Galerie Besson as part of the series of exhibitions – Trois Grandes Dames.
A major retrospective exhibition of Karnes’s work is planned at the Arizona State University. Entitled A Chosen Path: The Ceramic Art of Karen Karnes, the exhibition will survey Karnes’s work from the 1950s to the present, offering a full view of her stylistic development. The exhibition launches at the CRC in September 2010 and then begins a 2-year national tour.
