The performance Conversation Piece will take place at Booth F1

The duration of each performance is 55 minutes.

We are going to have a conversation
The conversation will be without words
We will use the object in front of us

Conversation Piece is a one to one performance that uses a writing device from the Victorian era known as a planchette. The ‘little plank’ was traditionally used in séances to draw out messages presumed to come from the spirit world. The performance re-imagines this spirit writing device as a tool for recording a live unspoken conversation.
Audience members are invited one at a time to take part in an intimate dialogue using the planchette. The development of each encounter depends on the dynamic each individual brings to the piece. Every conversation leaves its own unique mark and is reliant upon a sense of intimacy, negotiation and exchange.
Conversation Piece experiments with nature of human communication blurring the realms of psychology, spiritualism and belief. The work challenges traditional notions of spectatorship in performance and brings to debate issues relating to authorship, mark making and documentation in performance.
HELENA HUNTER

Helena Hunter is a UK artist based in London and her practice spans live performance, photography, film and video. Her work is body-based and addresses cultural issues relating to the politics of the body and the formation of desire. Her practice incorporates the body and movement, and utilises the body as text, site and sculptural tool to explore the tensions that exist between imagination and reality, desire and language, gender and representation.
Hunter’s work has toured throughout the UK and Europe to festivals and venues including: The Barbican Centre (London), The Royal Opera House (London), Jerome Zodo Contemporary Gallery (Milan), The City of Women Festival (Ljubljana), Istantanee Performance Festival (Rome), FEM Festival (Spain) and the International Body Art Festival in (France).
She was selected to perform Luminosity by Marina Abramović and Mirror Check by Joan Jonas as part of The 11 Rooms Group Show curated by Klaus Biesenbach and Hans Ulrich Obrist at Manchester International Festival 2011. Recent collaborative work has featured in The SPILL Tarot Exhibition at The Barbican Centre, the Peter Scott Gallery in Lancaster and On Landguard Point a feature film by Pacitti Company, part Artists Taking The Lead a major new work at the heart of the Cultural Olympiad.
Hunter has received awards and bursaries from Artsadmin, The Live Art Development Agency, The Foundation for Women’s Art, Arts Council England and Equity Charitable Trust. She was shortlisted for the UKYA British Art Showcase in 2010 and the Arts Foundation Award in 2011. Hunter is currently artist associate at The University of Chichester, she has taught performance at UK Universities including Queen Mary University of London, Trinity Laban, Goldsmiths University and Central School of Speech and Drama.
