Jerry Mischak: Tables and Chairs

New York, NY, USA Saturday, April 27, 2013–Saturday, June 1, 2013

Opening Reception April 27th 6-8pm

Jim Kempner Fine Art is very pleased to announce Tables and Chairs, an exhibition of new mixed media still-life works on paper by Jerry Mischak. This will be the artist’s third solo exhibition at the gallery. Curated by gallery director Dru Arstark, Tables and Chairs opens on April 27th and will be up through June 1st. A reception for the artist will be held on Saturday, April 27th from 6-8.

In this new series, Tables and Chairs, Mischak presents a modern spin on the traditional still-life motif. Images are composed of oil stick, irregular shapes of colored duct-tape and individual strokes of paint. These elements are collaged in a mosaic fashion to evoke an energized atmosphere. Sizes range from an intimate 12 by 16 inch single couch portrait, to an enveloping 8 by 6 foot table setting.

Known for his colorful duct-taped–wrapped sculptures and collages, Tables and Chairs incorporates similar materials, but focuses on the table as a site prepared for everyday ritual. Spawned from a 2010 exhibition at Industry Gallery in Washington, DC titled Din Din, Mischak built a 36-foot table, covered in a collection of dinnerware encased completely in duct tape. The objects amassed included vases, plates, utensils, bottles, and cell-phones.

Jerry Mischak lives and works in Providence, Rhode Island. Mischak’s 2012 solo exhibitions include: Follow the Leak”, Milstein Hall Gallery, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY; “Call It A Day” installation, Art Live Miami, Miami, FL; “Castillo de Pepino,” Sala de Exposiciones de la Fundacion Comillas, Spain; “Fifteen Drawings,” Corridor Gallery, University of Rhode Island, Kingston, RI.
