Descended from major figures in Abstract Expressionism, specifically the Color Field Painters, Marc Ross reaches a new level of accomplishment in formalist art revealing a technical facility in surface and color rarely seen today. The finished product, wonderfully rich in color and dense surface, is a tedious process arriving at a product that is a unique visual experience. The surface of each work is an historic record of the artist’s meticulous practice, a ceremonial experience, buried within. They are histories inscribed with organized—if inarticulate—mark making. These outcomes are present on the face of Ross’s work. Each field of oscillating color should be taken up for the form, beauty or meaning we find in our exploration.
