I have been with the gallery since the early 1990s and, from the beginning, we have been proud to present a wide variety of works on paper from many artists. Not all artists create works on paper, but many find the ease and quickness of working on paper to be pleasurable and advantageous. A perfect example is an artist who has been part of the gallery since its inception: Sam Francis. In addition to canvases, Francis created many, many works on paper. It is fascinating to me to see the variation in his paintings on paper as they range from sparse minimalist works such as the edge paintings to densely painted works such as the grid we are showing here (SF78-044 ). The thickness of the dark painted areas is accented by the variety of pops of rich, primary colors. Besides paintings on paper, we are presenting editioned works as well. The gallery has had the pleasure to work with Jim Dine for many years and Dine is, without question, a master printmaker who is deeply invested in the work. I had a hard time making selections from the many Dine prints we are fortunate enough to have in our gallery collection. I decided to choose works with two iconic Dine motifs: the heart and the robe. These works, Fog & Cold in July I, My Special Day, 2 Times and Madness and Blue also show a vast contrast in texture and color that captures the essence of Dine’s genius as an artist and printmaker. I hope you enjoy visiting our “booth”; we are excited to share these wonderful works with you. ~ Annie Burrows, Director
