Private View October 1st, 6-8pm
Paul Kasmin Gallery is pleased to announce an upcoming show of New Work by Frank Stella. The exhibition will be on view at 293 Tenth Avenue from October 1st to November 7th, 2009.
Fifty years after the inclusion of his now iconic Black paintings in MoMA's landmark 1959 exhibition "Sixteen Americans," Stella continues to explore new dimensions in abstraction. Just as his early paintings questioned the conventional relationship between a picture and its supporting field, these new polychrome relief sculptures from his Scarlatti Sonata series challenge viewers to adopt new ways of interpreting three-dimensional forms. Composed of coils, lattices and geometric volumes shot through with steel tubing, these works pull the eye along twists and turns that are both muscular and lyrical. Each change in vantage point reveals a new composition, while the bright, industrial coloring used on many of the works highlights their gestural passage through space.
Stella was born in 1936 in Malden, Massachusetts. Recent solo exhibitions include "Frank Stella on the Roof" and "Frank Stella: Painting into Architecture" at the Metropolitan Museum in 2007; and "Moby Dick: Frank Stella and Herman Melville" at the Grand Rapids Art Museum in 2009. A major five-decade retrospective of his career, organized by Michael Auping, chief curator of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, is planned for 2013.
