Kasmin is pleased to present Tide Pool, an exhibition of works by artists whose compositions are abstracted from natural forms and phenomenon, featuring paintings and works on paper spanning four decades. On view from February 22 until March 30, 2024 at 297 Tenth Avenue in New York, the exhibition will include works by Mary Abbott, Nell Blaine, Lynne Drexler, Jimmy Ernst, Sam Francis, Jane Freilicher, Grace Hartigan, Elaine de Kooning, Emily Mason, Robert Motherwell, Pat Passlof, Fairfield Porter, Hedda Sterne, and Anthe Zacharias.

Taking its title from Grace Hartigan’s 1972 collage, Tide Pool includes artists predominantly associated with Abstract Expressionism and the New York School. Reflective of a period of American art history in which the principles of abstract painting dominated for over a decade, and an inflection point loomed for many artists still wrestling with an impetus to return to representational forms, this exhibition examines the myriad creative directions chosen by a generation of artists. Some reaffirmed their commitments to total abstraction, such as Sam Francis and Anthe Zacharias. Others, including Nell Blaine, Jane Freilicher, and Alex Katz, embraced the classicism of still life and landscape painting while retaining the distinct painterliness developed during the height of the Abstract Expressionist period. Still, Lynne Drexler, Elaine de Kooning, and Hedda Sterne would continuously oscillate between these two poles for the duration of their careers.
