Elizabethtown College announces major exhibition of Lawrence Ferlinghetti art work and writings Elizabethtown to host “Lawrence Ferlinghetti: An American Cultural Icon,” curated by alumnus George Krevsky; exhibition opens Oct. 11

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA, October 5, 2018 – Elizabethtown College will hold a major exhibition of Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s art work and writings, titled “Lawrence Ferlinghetti: An American Cultural Icon.” The exhibition, curated by 25-year Ferlinghetti visual art representative George Krevsky ’62, opens Oct. 11 and runs through Nov. 21 in Lyet Gallery, housed in Leffler Chapel and Performance Center on the College’s campus.

As a literary figure, Ferlinghetti—the long-time editor and owner of the famous City Lights Books—has contributed directly and extensively to both the creative and editing fields of his art. Considered one of the most beloved members of the Beat Generation—a group which heavily influenced American post-World War II culture and politics—Ferlinghetti, at 99 years old, is regarded as a master of words and metaphors as well as color and visual symbolism.

Twenty of this iconic American cultural figure’s works will be celebrated in the College’s exhibition, chosen from an array of pieces produced from 1954 through 2011—a span of more than fifty years. This exhibition reflects examples of Ferlinghetti’s art work in various media, including painting, drawing, silk screens, mixed media and lithography, as well as the breadth of his painting across time.

Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m. Gallery admission, as well as admission to all featured events listed below, is at no charge and open to the public. More information is provided by the Department of Fine Arts.
