Kukje Gallery/Tina Kim Gallery is pleased to announce its participation in Art Basel 2019 from June 13 to 16, 2019. Art Basel remains the world's largest and most respected art fair and the upcoming edition will feature artists represented by approximately 290 top-tier international galleries from 34 countries including Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa. Art Basel presents different sectors including Galleries, where Kukje Gallery/Tina Kim Gallery is participating again this year; Feature, which includes projects from established and historical artists; Statements, which presents exciting new solo projects by emerging artists; Edition, which introduces leading publishers of editioned works, prints, and multiples; and Unlimited, which is a pioneering exhibition platform for projects that transcend the classic art-show context, including large-scale sculptures and paintings, video projections, installations, and live performances.
Of the sectors, Unlimited is a popular program that is spotlighted in Art Basel and is frequented by art lovers from all over the world. One of the fair’s most anticipated curated sectors, Unlimited has announced this year’s list of 75 artists including Suki Seokyeong Kang. Kang first gained international attention when she was awarded the Baloise Art Prize at Art Basel in 2018. Her contribution to this year’s Unlimited sector is Black Mat Oriole (2016-2017), a multimedia installation based on more than five years of dedicated research. The artist’s work explores modern society through a variety of formal concepts from classical Korean craft, poetry, and dance. This project focuses on chunaengmu, a rare form of solo dance among Korean court dances. Black Mat Oriole is all the more anticipated as it is a central component of the artist’s Land, Sand, Strand series currently on view in May You Live in Interesting Times, the 58th Venice Biennale (on view through November 24). Kang’s Land, Sand, Strand has been installed in the Arsenale, while her another work, Grandmother Tower, is in the Giardini.
Kukje Gallery/Tina Kim have been participating in Art Basel for over twenty years. This year, the galleries are once again pleased to present a wide-ranging presentation featuring critically acclaimed modern and contemporary master works. The booth will highlight important pieces by Dansaekhwa artists including Kwon Young-Woo’s Untitled (1985), part of the artist’s colored hanji (Korean paper) works from 1978 to 1989 created in Paris; Park Seo-Bo’s Ecriture (描法) No.180324 (2018) from his Ecriture series; and Ha Chong-Hyun’s Conjunction 14-694 (2014) from his ongoing Conjunction series, which utilizes the innovative method known as bae-ap-bub. Park Seo-Bo is the subject of a major retrospective titled Park Seo Bo: The Untiring Endeavorer currently on view at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul, through September 1.
In addition, the booth will also showcase iconic “dot paintings” including Closer… Come Closer… (1992) by Kim Yong-Ik, an artist who has maintained an independent stance amidst Korea’s dominant artistic movements and is currently featured in solo shows in New York and Berlin. Also on view will be Sonic Clotheshorse – Dressage #1 (2018) by the internationally acclaimed contemporary artist Haegue Yang, who will open a solo exhibition with Kukje Gallery in September and at Tate St. Ives in 2020.
Other works in the booth include Precious Stonewall (2019) a recent work by French artist Jean-Michel Othoniel, who recently unveiled his ALFA at the newly opened National Museum of Qatar, and Highway Painting, No. 6 (2019) by the Berlin-based artist duo Elmgreen & Dragset, first shown in their solo exhibition at Kukje Gallery in March.
Based in Seoul and Busan, Kukje Gallery Seoul is currently showing earthing, the gallery’s second solo exhibition of work by the Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone on view through June 30. earthing consists of four discreet works installed to convey the artist’s interest in time and how materials and nature shape the human experience. Kukje Gallery Busan is showcasing Dansaekhwa master artist Ha Chong-Hyun in his first solo exhibition in Busan titled Ha Chong-Hyun, through July 28. Ha Chong-Hyun is the artist’s first exhibition in Korea to include large Conjunction paintings made with a new palette including red, blue, and vermillion (a combination of red and orange known as dahongsaek).
