Art Basel

Messeplatz 10 Basel, 4005, Switzerland Thursday, June 15, 2017–Sunday, June 18, 2017 Booth D8

Kukje Gallery/Tina Kim Gallery will participate in the 48th iteration of Art Basel at the Messeplatz in Basel, Switzerland, from June 15 to 18, 2017. The upcoming edition will feature over 4,000 artists represented by 291 top-tier international galleries.

Kukje Gallery/Tina Kim Gallery will participate in the Galleries sector, the main sector of the fair in which 226 renowned, international galleries will showcase their artists. The gallery’s booth will showcase works by Dansaekhwa artists including Ha Chong-Hyun, Lee Ufan, Kwon Young-Woo, and Park Seo-Bo. Also on display will be works by subsequent generations of Korean artists such as Haegue Yang, Kim Yong-Ik, and an international roster of artists including Ghada Amer, Jean-Michel Othoniel, and Bill Viola.

Kukje Gallery is also very pleased to announce that Park Chan-kyong has been selected to exhibit his 3-channel video installation Citizen’s Forest (2016) in the Unlimited sector, which is curated for the sixth consecutive time by Gianni Jetzer, a renowned New York-based curator and curator-at-large at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. Citizen’s Forest, which debuted at the Taipei Biennial in 2016, is also being shown at Park’s solo exhibition 安寧 Farewell at Kukje Gallery from May 25 to July 2.

At their Galleries sector booth, Kukje Gallery will present Haegue Yang, who was recently appointed Professor of Fine Art at the Städelschule in Frankfurt. Yang will present a selection of new works including Jahnstrasse 5 (2017), series consisting of five wall-mounted metal sculptures containing lights and colorful Venetian blinds. Each piece replicates in size and shape every boiler and radiator in Yang’s apartment in Berlin. This is a reinterpretation of Yang’s signature series Manteuffelstrasse 112 (2010-2011), which reacquaints the viewer with standardized, everyday objects presented through the artist’s signature medium of venetian blinds. During Art Basel, Yang will join a group exhibition at Museum Morsbroich in Leverkusen, Germany, from May 21 to August 27.

The booth will also introduce an extensive selection of early works by Kim Yong-Ik, who has been showcasing his signature “polka dot” painting series since the 1990s. Kim’s pioneering practice defied most of the key art historical movements of the past forty years in Korea, constantly evolving in the process and at times engaging in public art and the establishment of an alternative art space. His wide-ranging contributions have been recognized in both domestic and international spheres, placing the artist at the forefront of the post-Dansaekhwa generation of artists. Kim is currently presenting a solo show at Tina Kim Gallery in New York. The artist also participated in a talk tracing his artistic practice and accomplishments titled Art Space Pool: A History with Kim Yong-Ik, Sunghee Lee, and Sohl Lee at Asia Art Archive in New York on May 5.

Ha Chong-Hyun, one of the leading figures of Dansaekhwa, will publish a catalogue raisonné in September. The publication will include a comprehensive presentation of the artist’s works from the 1950s to this day, many of them never before seen by the public. Accompanying the images will be essays by Alfred Pacquement, the former Director of the National Museum of Modern Art in the Center Georges Pompidou, Barry Schwabsky, an art critic and Artforum contributor, and Kyung An, Assistant Curator of Asian Art at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York.
