 Kukje Gallery/Tina Kim Gallery will participate in ART021 Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair in China. The fair will take place at the Shanghai Exhibition Center from November 9 to 12, 2017. Founded in 2013, ART021 has quickly become one of Shanghai’s foremost art fairs, celebrating its fifth year and critically acknowledged as providing a superior platform for international contemporary art. This year’s edition will open in conjunction with and as part of the China Shanghai International Arts Festival (October 20 – November 19, 2017), and will draw in an expected broader and even more diverse number of visitors than in previous years.   

The fifth edition of ART021 will feature three sections: Main Galleries, Approach, and Beyond Public Projects. Eighty-two galleries will participate in the Main Galleries section; the Approach section will feature solo presentations and curated projects showcasing up to three individual artists; the Beyond Public Projects section will introduce sculptures and installations in public spaces both in and outside of the fair.    

Echoing the rapidly growing appreciation for international contemporary art in the Chinese art scene, Kukje Gallery/Tina Kim Gallery will showcase works by a celebrated roster of artists including Donald Judd, Roni Horn, Bill Viola, Ugo Rondinone, Anish Kapoor, Jenny Holzer, Julian Opie, Ghada Amer, Candida Höfer, and Jean-Michel Othoniel. Established in 1982, Kukje Gallery very often has been the first venue to present prominent international artists in Korea with its diverse and ambitious programming, and will showcase the continuing legacy of its pioneering history in China at ART021.    

At their booth in the Main Galleries section, Kukje Gallery/Tina Kim Gallery will prominently install Delicate Threads (2012) from Bill Viola's (b. 1951) Mirage series. Viola is currently the subject of an extensive retrospective at the Redtory Museum of Contemporary Art (RMCA) in Guangzhou, China. Also on view will be a large selection of Julian Opie’s (b. 1958) paintings and LCD works including Shaida. (2016), Flight Attendant. (2015), and Student. 1. (2014). Opie is currently holding a solo exhibition at the Suwon iPark Museum of Art through January 28, 2018, and at the National Portrait Gallery in London. Opie held his first solo exhibition in China at the Fosun Foundation in Shanghai earlier this year. In addition, Ugo Rondinone’s (b. 1964) large-scale cast aluminum mask sculpture moonrise. east. april (2005) has been selected for the Beyond Public Projects section. One of the artist’s first series of figurative sculptures, the work represents the relationship between the moon, tide, and months of the calendar, reflecting the artist’s ongoing interest in the passage of the time.
