Kukje Gallery is participating in Frieze London from October 4 to October 7, 2018. The upcoming edition of Frieze London will be held in a sprawling tent temporarily installed in London’s Regent’s Park and will include 160 major galleries from all over the world showcasing critically acclaimed contemporary artworks. Opening to coincide with Frieze London are Frieze Masters—devoted to exhibiting masterpieces dating from the ancient era through the 20th century—and Frieze Sculpture—London's largest display of outdoor works including projects by both emerging and leading contemporary artists. Combined, the three sections of the fair make Frieze Week the most important cultural event of October in London.
Kukje Gallery will highlight works by Dansaekhwa artists as well as showcase major works by both Korean and international contemporary artists. The booth will present Kwon Young-Woo’s hanji (Korean paper) works from the 1980s, featuring the late artist’s signature technique of using his fingernails and tools to cut, tear, and puncture the paper—emphasizing the materiality and tactility of the medium. The display will also include works such as Park Seo-Bo’s iconic Ecriture (描法) No. 991226 (1999) from his signature Ecriture series, Ha Chong-Hyun’s recent work Conjunction 17-53 (2017) from his Conjunction series, and Kim Yong-Ik’s dot paintings which were previously presented in the United Kingdom at his two-part solo exhibition last year at Spike Island in Bristol and the Korean Cultural Centre UK in London.
Kukje Gallery is also pleased to showcase acclaimed contemporary Korean and international artists. Gimhongsok, who will have a solo exhibition at New York’s Tina Kim Gallery opening on October 25, will present new sculptures and Haegue Yang, who has successfully opened her recent solo show at La Triennale di Milano, will show her installation Sol LeWitt Upside Down – Five Unit Cross, Expanded 48 Times (2017). Kyungah Ham will present her meticulously hand-embroidered paintings created in collaboration with North Korean artisans; Byron Kim, who is participating in the current Gwangju Biennale, will display his ongoing series Sunday Paintings, in which he commits himself to a single painting of the sky every Sunday; and Michael Joo, whose work is currently on view at Art Sonje Center in Seoul in conjunction with his participation in the Real DMZ Project, will show Liminus (East Landing 3) (2017). The booth will also feature Ablutions (2005) by internationally celebrated video artist Bill Viola and Kunstakademie Düsseldorf III 2011 by Candida Höfer—an artist whose works continue to broaden the scope of contemporary photography.
On view as a part of Frieze Sculpture in Regent’s Park will be Kimsooja’s 14-meter-high, 1.3-meter-diameter sculpture, A Needle Woman: Galaxy was a Memory, Earth is a Souvenir. A needle-shaped steel pavilion, the work was created in collaboration with Cornell Unviersity’s Wiesner Group which specializes in nanomaterials and architect Jaeho Chong. The transparent, acrylic surface of the structure has been treated with nanopolymers, which refract natural light and will radiate iridescent colors throughout Regent’s Park.
