Kukje Gallery is pleased to announce its participation in Frieze London and Frieze Masters 2023, from October 11 to 15, 2023. In honor of the 20th anniversary of Frieze London, this year’s exceptional program is set to welcome a global audience with a variety of projects, collaborations, and events that exceed its previous editions. Frieze London will focus on artworks dating from the 2000s onwards, showcasing the latest trends in contemporary art and featuring over 160 galleries from 40 countries, including 59 London-based galleries. Meanwhile, Frieze Masters, assembling a vast collection of ancient and modern masterpieces that possess both visual and art-historical significance, is anticipated to be the most international fair in the history of Frieze, with over 130 participating galleries. Commemorating the 20th anniversary, the week will unfold with a diverse array of cultural and art programs hosted by galleries, institutions, alternative spaces, and more across the city as a part of Frieze Week.
In Frieze Masters, Kukje Gallery will collaborate with Mazzoleni Art, a gallery based in London and Turin to present a diverse collection of works by Korean and Italian modern and contemporary artists that complement one another in material and conceptual inspiration. Notable works include Park Seo-Bo’s Écriture (描法) No. 981209 (1998), a geometrically structured painting from the 1990s, as well as Nucleus (1974) and Nucleus (1970s) by Lee Seung Jio whose works will be displayed at Mazzoleni London’s two-person exhibition with the European master Agostino Bonalumi from October 11, 2023. Lee, widely recognized as a pioneering figure in geometric abstraction in Korea, is known for his cool color palettes and repeated pipe-motifs characterized by contrasting compositions. Moreover, the booth will showcase moon jars by Kil Sung, a ceramic artist who resurrected idodawan, or a tea bowl, from the Joseon Dynasty which had disappeared from history for over 500 years. Mazzoleni Art, established in 1986, has consistently introduced masterpieces by 20th century giants such as Lucio Fontana and Giorgio de Chirico. In this year’s Masters booth, along with Agostino Bonalumi, featured in Mazzoleni’s two-person exhibition, the gallery will showcase works by prominent Italian artists who have redefined the history of Italian art, including Alberto Burri, Lucio Fontana, Carla Accardi, and others. Through their collaboration, Kukje Gallery aims to create a rich discourse bridging the art historical currents of modern Italian and Korean artists.
Kukje Gallery is currently hosting Haegue Yang’s presentation Latent Dwelling (through October 8, 2023) at its Hanok. In addition, a major solo exhibition of Anish Kapoor fills Kukje Gallery's K1, K2, and K3 spaces and a solo exhibition of Wook-kyung Choi, a prominent female abstract expressionist painter, is on display at Kukje Gallery Busan through October 22, 2023.
