Timeline

Born near Kiev in 1893, Simka Simkhovitch enrolled in the art school at Odessa, then he transferred to the Royal Academy in St. Petersburg. After graduation in 1918, he began teaching. During the early 1920s, Simkhovitch experimented with the Constructivist style in set designs. For unknown reasons, the painter came to New York in 1924 where he had to work as an illustrator.
