Artist’s Reception: Friday, Nov. 4, 5:30 – 7:30pm
LewAllen Galleries is pleased to announce its upcoming exhibition, Barry Brukoff: Temples of Eternal Memories, on view at the Railyard gallery from Nov. 4 – Dec. 11, 2011. The exhibition is of remarkable photographic images created by the artist in response to his intense engagement with the spiritual significance of ancient places and sacred ruins.
Brukoff’s fascination with ancient cultures began in his twenties, when he first visited the magnificent temples of Angkor Wat. Inspired by the sacred architecture of the Khmer civilization, Brukoff’s love of travel and discovery developed into a desire to pictorially document prehistoric places. A deep personal reverence for antediluvian landscapes has led Brukoff to converge many of his photographic experiences into immersive books. These monographs, which feature text from such renowned authors as John Fowles and Isabel Allende, express the universal fascination with sacred architecture. Brukoff cites a desire to provide viewers with “more than a mere photographic record… I hope to impart a sense of how it feels to be among these ruins, to walk through a thick jungle and come upon a magical edifice.” In recreating this singular sensation, he exposes sacred sites in an astonishing and otherworldly light.
Currently residing in San Francisco, Barry Brukoff studied sculpture, painting, and design at the Chicago Art Institute. He has directed the publication of six photographic books on the ancient cultures of Morocco, Greece, Macchu Picchu, Angkor Wat, and Stonehenge; his forthcoming book will explore the Mayan civilization. Collaborating with iconic artists and writers like Gore Vidal and Henry Moore, Brukoff has been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades throughout his long career. His photography has been the subject of exhibitions across the country and is included in major private and public collections across the country.
