Joanna Pousette-Dart (b. 1947) lives and works in New York City. In the mid 1970’s Pousette-Dart began spending time in New Mexico, where she has intermittently gone to live and work over the years. In the 1980’s she spent time in Galisteo and her perceptions of the place noticably affected her work. In interviews, she has explained that she feels the curvature of the earth in Galisteo and that painting within a rectangle now seemed arbitrary. This feeling combined with taking 360-degree photographs and taping them together for a continuous landscape, led to the shaped panels.
