New York City, NY —Louis K. Meisel Gallery is pleased to announce Susan Pear Meisel, an exhibition that celebrates the long-standing career of the artist. Active in line and color, Susan Meisel’s paintings, prints and posters are featured in this show. Her vibrant work depicts burgeoning spring in cities and at landmarks across the East Coast. Using a combination of paint and ink to make her paintings, her scenes are lively, capturing bustling scenes of happy children and blooming flowers alike.   

Inspired by the work of Maurice Prendergast and Raoul Dufy, Meisel’s artworks frequently capture urban scenes at their busiest. Like Prendergast, her compositions are typically filled with women and children.  Crowds of people animate her works, all relishing in the sights, sounds, and the unexpected beauty of the urban environments in which they are depicted. From Bethesda Fountain in New York City to the beaches of Miami to the great museums of D.C., Meisel chooses recognizable, relatable subjects, thereby creating democratized imagery for her audience.   

For Meisel, color takes on a prominent role. The artist draws from the work of Fauvist Dufy. Bright colors dance loosely upon the surface of Meisel’s works. Her scenes are at once colorful and effervescent. To create her works, Meisel paints seemingly amorphous areas of color upon her canvases, and then, as part of her unique style, draws directly on the painting with pen and ink to enhance the details. All told, her works have an illustrative quality as her use of ink and lines create a playful layering within the composition. Meisel states, “[it is my hope that] my paintings . . . are able to make as many people as possible happy.”  

Susan Pear Meisel has been painting for over 60 years. Her works are included in numerous public collections in the United States. Over the years, she has been commissioned to paint landmarks across NYC and in Washington D.C., including the “Kennedy Center” and “The White House” for Bill Clinton’s 1994 campaign. Due to the success of these joyous and painterly depictions, Meisel worked to turn her paintings into lithographs and prints which have been wildly popular. 

Susan Pear Meisel will be open to the public from March 7th to April 20th at the Louis K. Meisel Gallery from Tuesday thru Saturday, between the hours of 10am and 5pm. Paintings, prints and posters by the artist are available for sale. For further information, please contact [email protected].
