Marc Selwyn Fine Art is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by Matt Lipps. HORIZON/S comes on the heels of his Home Series completed in 2008. As in his last body of work, Lipps takes cut out sculptural forms and recontextualizes them to blur the distinction between figure and ground, illusion and reality. HORIZON/S, which appropriates images from the bimonthly publication from 1958 to 1968, breaks new ground in its use of themed subject matter, dramatic lighting effects, rich color, and a mysterious sense of place and display.

As the artist describes:

HORIZON/S is an art historical project that explores the multiplicity of meanings engendered by imagery found in the bimonthly arts and culture magazine. Looking at the first ten years of the publication, I selected image fragments painting, sculpture, architecture, film and theater-from Greek antiquity to modern 1960's popular culture - with the goal of challenging the institutional voice of the editors as they invite Americans to join them on a journey toward a virtual horizon of finer taste. As the decontextualized images are reshuffled through multiple photographic displays, they convey conflicting but related messages and explore the power of context. Images in Public Collections are presented on a blank institutional backdrop and organized around a curatorial theme. Private Collections assembles fewer unrelated objects on a narrative photographic background providing insight into the collector's personal taste.

Matt Lipps received his MFA from University of California, Irvine in 2004. His work is in the colletion of Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Hammer Museum, Los Angeles. In early 2011, Lipps’ work was part of LAXART’s billboard project in Los Angeles. He lives and works in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
