Tony Smith: Drawings and Paintings
June 26 – August 14, 2004

Marc Selwyn Fine Art is pleased to announce an exhibition of drawings and paintings by the late New York artist, Tony Smith. This exhibition features six paintings and five drawings made between 1953 and 1962.

Although Smith counted several abstract expressionists – Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman and Jackson Pollock as his closest friends and contemporaries, his interest in geometry and form led him to produce minimalist work. As Fernan Bono notes in a review of Smith’s retrospective from 2002 at the Institute of Modern Art in Valencia, Spain, “Smith has always been seen by critics as one of the most influential founders of the minimalist movement, alongside the artists Agnes Martin, Donald Judd and Robert Morris.”

Tony Smith was born in 1912 in South Orange, New Jersey. In 1934, he began studying nights at the Art Students League in New York while working days at his father’s ironworks factory. Tony Smith was schooled and trained in modernist architecture. He was an assistant to Frank Lloyd Wright and then opened his own architectural design studio. He worked for twenty years as an architectural designer and then as a professor of architecture before a car accident led him to concentrate on creating sculptural forms from models. He was a committed teacher, serving as college professor for 34 years at many universities and colleges.

Tony Smith has been internationally exhibited and his work has received innumerable awards. He is included in the permanent collections of many museums including the Hirschorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington D.C., Museum of Modern Art, N.Y., Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art, N.Y., The Whitney Museum of American Art, N.Y., and The Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno, Spain.

Marc Selwyn Fine Art is open Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00 am to 6:00 pm.
