Marianne Boesky Gallery will dedicate its Frieze London presentation to the Haas Brothers, featuring a selection of the artists’ ceramic Accretions. Created through a technique developed by Nikolai and Simon Haas, the brightly-colored Accretions exemplify the artistic innovation and sense of whimsy for which the Brothers have come to be recognized. The gallery’s presentation at Frieze will mark the Haas Brothers’ first solo exhibition in London—introducing new audiences to their creative vision and approach—and will coincide with a solo show of their work at the gallery in New York.
The Accretions are made through a meticulous multi-tiered process in which a brush dipped in pigmented porcelain slip is dragged along the sides of a hand-thrown clay vase, sometimes up to 10,000 times. The repetition of the stroke produces miniscule clay extensions across the object’s body that suggest the tentacles of a mysterious sea creature. Indeed, the works are inspired by the organic forms and growth patterns of ocean coral and funghi. The use of color is also an important facet, as the Haas Brothers’ leverage their custom-mixed pigments to evoke a sense of depth and subtle movement across the surface of the Accretions.
