Mark Murray Fine Paintings is a gallery specializing in European and American paintings from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The gallery’s ever-changing collection includes a range of periods and subject matter, including paintings by the French and American Impressionists, Pre-Raphaelites, Hudson River School, marine paintings by British and Scandinavian artists, landscapes by Corot and his followers in Barbizon, exquisite views of Italy and Spain, traditional 19th-century sculpture by Barye, Mêne, and others, and a substantial selection of Orientalist paintings by artists such as Weeks, Bridgman, and Fromentin. Although most works (oil paintings, watercolors, and sculpture) date from 1830 to 1930, there are often exceptions, such as a group of 18th-century Dutch landscapes and several specially chosen Contemporary paintings.
Mark Murray Fine Paintings caters to an international group of collectors, designers, and private and public institutions. Several museums have acquired works from the gallery: among them the Dahesh Museum in New York and the San Diego Museum of Art in California. Paintings in the collection or acquired from the gallery have been included in major museum exhibitions at the British Library, London, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. The gallery participates in two major art fairs every year including the prestigious International Fine Art Fair held at the Armory in New York.
The gallery was founded in 1992 by Mark Murray who, after being raised in England, obtained a degree in art history from Harvard University, and spent six years as a senior specialist in 19th-century European paintings at Sotheby’s.
A complimentary illustrated brochure is available upon request as are past annual gallery catalogues subject to availability. Articles about the gallery have appeared in numerous publications such as Architectural Digest, Art & Auction, The Art Newspaper, Art & Antiques, and W.
