The Michael Kohn Gallery is pleased to present a group exhibition focused on the aesthetic contemplation of mysticism in both contemporary art practice and contemporary practices of looking at art. This exhibition brings to light a certain Grand Theme—an aspect of introspection and perceived reality when looking at works of art that explores the rich inner landscape of one’s consciousness, both sacred and profane. There is a strong strain of mysticism among some Californian artists working during the 1960s and 70s, and their work will be represented by paintings, collage and light sculpture. Similarly, this quality of allusiveness, of poetic touch, can be found in some of the best artists working today like Fred Tomaselli, Vija Celmins and Bill Viola.
