Mood Indigo: The Legacy of Duke Ellington
A Look at Jazz & Improvisation in American Art
May 21 – July 30, 2004

Features a selection of American art inspired by jazz and improvisation, including works by: Romare Bearden, Norman Bluhm, Ilya Bolotowsky, Eldzier Cortor, Miguel Covarrubias, Stuart Davis, Beauford Delaney, Hans Hofmann, William H. Johnson, Franz Kline, Lee Krasner, Norman Lewis, Jan Matulka, Gjon Mili, Archibald J. Motley, Jr., Gordon Parks, Victor Schreckengost, Alma Thomas, Charmion von Wiegand, and George Wettling.

Highlighting the exhibition is the sale of the white Kramer baby grand piano on which Edward “Duke” Kennedy Ellington composed dozens of jazz classics including Mood Indigo, Sophisticated Lady, and Harlem. After four decades with the Ellington family, this is the first time that the piano will be on display to the general public.
