Born
1881
Won 1st prize in an exhibition in San Antonio, Texas for his portrait of the Govenor of Nuevo León. Award included a scholarship that led him to the Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes, Mexico City.
1884 - 1891
Began his studies at the Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes. Studied there for the next eight years. Won numerous awards for watercolors, his favorite medium at the time.
1891
Attracted the attention of Mrs. Phoebe Apperson Hearst, mother of William Randolph Hearst. (His watercolor painting was selected for decoration on the menu for a state dinner Mrs. Hearst attended, given by President Porfirio Díaz.) Impressed with his work, Hearst awarded him a monthly stipend of 500 francs that enabled him to travel to Paris for further study.

Won a gold medal at the Salon d’Automne in Paris for his painting, Le Printemps .
1913
Appointed director of the School of Fine Arts, Mexico City. Opened first "Open Air School of Art" with 10 boys at Santa Anita Ixtapalapa, a suburb of Mexico City.
1923
Awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Leopold by King Albert of Belgium, in recognition for work for the advancement of pictorial culture.
1925
Director of four
Assumed directorship of four “Open Air” schools, with an enrollment of 3,000 students.
1940
Taught summer session at Fine Arts Gallery, San Diego.
1946
Died November 8, at the age of 73, in Los Angeles. Buried at Holy Cross Cemetery.
