Studied at the Surikov Art Institute, Moscow, Russia
1960 - 1969
In the 1960s Bulatov formed the Sretensky Boulevard Group with Ilya Kabakov, Eduard Shteinberg, Vladimir Yankilevsky, and Viktor Pivovarov
1980 - 1989
His 'philosophical Sots art' in the second half of the 1980s earned him wide renown as the 'artist of perestroyka' (political and economic transformation), whose work symbolized the advent of a new stage in Russian art
2008
In 2008 Bulatov became an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Arts
Lives and works in Paris, France
