Peter Blake Gallery is pleased to commemorate its twenty-fifth year with an exhibition of the gallery’s historic West Coast Minimalism collection.  Peter Blake first opened the doors to his eponymous Laguna Beach gallery in 1993. In the years since, Peter’s faithfulness to his creative vision—irrespective of broader trends—has allowed him to preserve vintage West Coast Minimalist works from the sixties and seventies, while also embracing emerging artists that continue working with Southern California’s signature art- historical themes.  Now the longest-running gallery exhibiting West Coast Minimalism to date, Peter has been a champion for the artists assembled into this category for the past twenty-five years. Over the last several years, many of these artists have taken chief roles at major exhibitions across the nation, such as “Mary Corse: A Survey in Light” at the Whitney Museum of American Art (June 8 – November 25, 2018), “Larry Bell: Aspen Blues” at the Aspen Art Museum (June 1 – November 25, 2018), and “Helen Pashgian: Light Invisible” at LACMA (March 30 – June 29, 2014). As these artists’ esteemed works have come under the spotlight on a virtually-global stage, the gallery’s anniversary offers a propitious occasion to revisit these historic works in a local setting.  Though the artists of West Coast Minimalism are credited with decades-long careers, the various subgrouping of their work into the categories of Light and Space, Finish Fetish, Cool School, and so on is indicative of an absence of consensus in terms of how these works have been received. Peter’s masterful ability to not only bring these works together under one roof, but to do so with his inimitable installations presents a singular experience.  In June 2019, Peter Blake Gallery will celebrate this milestone anniversary with a presentation of works by Lita Albuquerque, Peter Alexander, Larry Bell, Mary Corse, Tony Delap, Fred Eversley, Joe Goode, Craig Kauffman, John McCracken, Helen Pashgian, and De Wain Valentine.
