Frieze New York 2013

Peter Blum New York, NY, USA Friday, May 10, 2013–Monday, May 13, 2013

For the second edition of Frieze Art Fair on New York City’s Randall’s Island, Peter Blum Gallery is pleased to present a two-person exhibition of new works by Rosy Keyser and Esther Kläs.

Together with traditional painting materials, Rosy Keyser’s large process-driven abstractions are comprised of everyday materials from the rural surroundings of her studio in Upstate New York and the urban environs of her studio in Brooklyn. She challenges the physical limitations of these materials: corrugated metal, canvas, and paint among others through repeated sanding, scorching, slicing, sewing, and re-stretching. Often, the grid of the stretcher bars is at once substrate and integral part of the image. With her innovative works, Keyser challenges our preconceived notions of what painting is.

Keyser’s work has been reviewed in numerous publications including The New York Times, Artforum, Art in America, The New Yorker, ARTnews, The New York Observer, and Frieze Magazine. She is currently exhibited at the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis in the group show Painter, Painter curated by Bartholomew Ryan and Eric Crosby. Peter Blum Gallery held a solo show of new paintings by Keyser for the inaugural exhibition Medusa Pie Country at the new 57th Street gallery from February to April 2013. This month the artist will be included in the exhibition Painting from the Zabludowicz Collection: Part II at the Zabludowicz Collection, London, which will feature work from their permanent collection. Last year, Keyser was included in the group exhibition Pink Caviar at the Louisiana Museum of Art in Denmark where her work is part of the permanent collection.

Esther Kläs, another artist who integrates traditional and non-traditional media into their work, will exhibit a pair of new monolithic sculptures comprised of aquaresin and pigments. Through the casting process Kläs is able to paradoxically capture the energy of movement. The two sculptures will be on view at Frieze alongside a new series of works on paper. The exhibition at Frieze will be the premiere presentation of Kläs’s works on paper by Peter Blum Gallery.

Kläs’s first solo museum exhibition was curated by Peter Eleey at MoMA PS1 in the summer of 2012. The Public Art Fund commissioned the artist to create a year-long outdoor installation at the MetroTech Center in Brooklyn, New York on view through September 16. Opening on May 5, 2013, Kläs will be included in the Stiftung Skulpturenpark Köln #7 exhibition in Germany curated by Friedrich Meschede. From June 13-16 she will also be featured at the highly anticipated Art Unlimited section of Art Basel, Switzerland curated by Gianni Jetzer.

Kläs’s solo exhibition Nobody Home (November 2011 – January 2012) at Peter Blum Chelsea gallery was reviewed by Art in America, Modern Painters, Mousse Magazine, The New Yorker, The Wall Street Journal and Sculpture Magazine.
