Timeline

1915: Born October 13th in Leamington Spa
1946 - 1947: Moved to Cornwall
Studied at St. Ives School of Painting
1947: Began period of study at Camberwell School of Art where he was taught by, amongst others, members of the pre-war Euston Road group
1948: Began to paint abstract works
Completed NDD
1952 - 1954: Visiting lecturer at the Bath Academy of Art
1956: Part-time lecturer at Leeds College of Art
1963: Part-time Lecturer at Coventry School of Art
1965: Full-time Lecturer in the Department of Fine Art, University of Reading
1970: Appointed Reader in the University of Reading
1974: Moved studio to Newlyn
1977: Professor of Painting, University of Reading
Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from CNAA
1981: Retired from Reading, made Professor Emeritus
1992: Elected RA
1998: Knighted
2003: Died September 1, 2003
