Biography

Timeline

Having lost much of his fortune in an ill-advised property deal, Dean Wolstenholme Snr became an artist to support himself. He drew on his country experiences of hunting and coursing as subjects for his work and exhibited steadily at the Royal Academy from 1803. His son, Charles Dean Wolstenholme Jnr (1793-1883) also became an animal painter of note. Both artists populated their landscapes with horsemen and horses rather than specifically commissioned individuals and their mounts
