Roberts Projects is thrilled to announce its participation in Art Basel Miami Beach 2019 with a presentation of new monumental work by Betye Saar and Kehinde Wiley, along with contributions by Jeffrey Gibson, Amoako Boafo,Lenz Geerk, Wangari Mathenge, Otis Quaicoe, Celeste Rapone, Ardeshir Tabrizi and Zhao Zhao.
Focusing on the concept of identity, our presentation argues for a new model of contemporaneous self for and by artists, in a period of theoretical redirection of information, power, and freedom. At a time of geopolitical flux, identity is increasingly an instrument of social action, where the role of media and internet participation is of greater relevance and no longer constrained by physical boundaries. The centerpiece of our installation is a large-scale assemblage tableau by Saar, composed of a canoe and featuring painted and sculptural elements. Silhouetted against blue lights, its shape conjures a sense of being submerged and transcending space and time. Smaller assemblages showcase Saar's wide-ranging talents, interspaced amongst a new portrait by Wiley, a playful presentation of small paintings by Geerk, and a beaded figurative sculpture by Gibson, among other works.
