Text by Jill Moniz, PhD

On the Shelf presents new assemblage work by Betye Saar (born 1926) continuing her "struggle of memory against the attraction of forgetting" the physical and emotional experiences of racism that have engaged her artist vision since the early 70s. This code-rich body of work was born from necessity; Saar could not carry on the mystical series that has occupied her recent practice until she addressed the continued discursive, racial narrative so prevalent in the United States.

This publication accompanies the exhibition Betye Saar on the Shelf, at Roberts & Tilton, Culver City, California, November 1 - December 15, 2014.
