ROBILANT + VOENA are delighted to announce an exhibition of Italian Old Master paintings at SPERONE WESTWATER’s new Bowery premises in New York, opening on 7 January through to 19 February 2011. This outstanding show will offer an exciting contrast between New York’s contemporary art world, the gallery’s cutting edge architecture and historic masterpieces by painters such as Canaletto (1697-1768), Cavalier d’Arpino (1568-1640), Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-1654), and Michele Marieschi (1711-1743).
The exhibition will unveil several new discoveries. Among the highlights will be a very rare signed male Portrait by Artemisia Gentileschi, one of the most highly regarded female artists of the Baroque. It will sit with A Portrait of Ferdinando Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua by Tiberio Titi, another spectacular seventeenth century work and a new oeuvre addition. An early Francesco Guardi of Piazza San Marco represents a newly discovered work from the late 1750s when he was still very much under Canaletto’s influence. A fascinating comparison will be made with a hitherto also unpublished late Lagoon, illustrating just how far the artist then took his own individual interpretation of the Venetian veduta. A small and exquisite Canaletto View of the Lock at Dolo will complete this set of important discoveries.
Other early masterworks will include two rare works by Cavalier d’Arpino, who hosted Caravaggio in his studio following his arrival in Rome. A David with the Head of Goliath, a signed and dated work from the extensive Aldobrandini collection and treasured by several papal Cardinals since its creation, will contrast forcefully with a highly seductive Venus & Cupid executed a few years later. Works by Batistello Caracciolo, Angelo Caroselli and Carlo Dolci will exemplify the prominence of religious narrative during the seventeenth century, whilst a spectacular Marieschi, a signed Panini, a Joli and above mentioned Guardis and Canaletto underline the eighteenth century fascination with the veduta.
Through this collaborative project, ROBILANT + VOENA and SPERONE WESTWATER will inaugurate a closer partnership going forward. This will be reflected in both galleries sharing a new space in London, 2nd Floor at 38 Dover Street, W1, which will open with a joint show in 2011.
