Milestones brings together nine glass sculptures created in Murano in collaboration with maestro Andrea Zilio, and twenty glass monotypes created in Gokarna, India, offering examples that encapsulate the artist’s signature lyrical and organic style.  Together, the works examine the interplay of the literal and symbolic.  The concept of a ‘milestone’ was born in Ancient Rome.  At the heart of the city stood the Milliarium Aureum – a marble column sheathed in bronze.  All distances were then measured from this point, and granite or marble markers placed at even increments alongside the road; thus conceiving the milestone. Yet, the word ‘milestone’ has a dual meaning: aside from being a physical monument, the term can denote a moment in time or an event which shifts the direction of one’s life. This is the moment from which the past and the future are measured.

In this exhibition, di Robilant transforms the intangible into the physical. By treating sculpture as an embodiment of something which cannot be seen, rather than as a representational object, each work has the potential to shift in meaning, taking on a distinct identity for each viewer. This entity is something one must imagine, rather than anything that can be discerned. These ‘milestones’ thus have a flexible and interactive significance, allowing the beholder to shape their relationship with these delicate forms through their own perspective. In this way, di Robilant walks the fine line between abstraction and representation
