ROBILANT+VOENA celebrate over sixteen years of exhibiting at TEFAF Maastricht, with solo presentations of two artists highly representative of the gallery’s program over the years - Gaspar van Wittel (1652-1736) and Lucio Fontana (1899-1968).

Gaspar van Wittel known as ‘Vanvitelli’, played a pivotal role in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, in the development of topographical paintings, known as vedute. Originally from Holland, he moved to Rome in 1674, where he made a career and resided until his death. Gifted with a profound understanding of perspective and architecture, he became the first known of the view painters or vedutisti, producing a spectacular variety of representations of Italian cities that are accurate, precise and detailed.

Following on from Gaspar van Wittel, Italian Views from the early 1700s, which was the first monographic UK solo-show on Vanvitelli, held at their London gallery in 2008, Robilant+Voena’s TEFAF booth will include ten paintings which stand out due to their remarkable size and spectacular pictorial realisation. The varied and extensive selection of works will include key examples the artist completed during the early 1700s, covering the Italian landscape from north to south. Representing the north of the peninsula are the view of Lake Maggiore (A View of Lago Maggiore with the Isole Borromee) and Venice (A Pair of Views of Venice and A view of the Bacino di San Marco looking West); proceeding south we have the views of Rome (View of the Colosseum and the Arch of Constantine) and the river Tiber (View of the Tiber at the Porto della Legna and View of the Port of Ripa Grande), and lastly Naples (A View of the Bay of Pozzuoli and View of the Grotto of Posillipo) and Messina (Messina from the Sea, with the church of Santa Maria della Grotta).

Leading on from the Lucio Fontana solo-show held at their St Moritz space from December 2015 to March 2016 and showcasing around twenty artworks, the gallery will present seven emblematic Tagli (Cuts) from the Concetto Spaziale series realised during the 1950s and 1960s, two ceramics (from 1953-1961/62), one sculpture made in brass (1967) and one terracotta (1959). In addition to these seminal works the gallery will present Concetto Spaziale. Forma dated 1957 and belonging to the Inchiostri (Ink) series.
