Jim Thorell | MYKORRHIZA

Hohe Straße 53 Düsseldorf, 40213, Germany Saturday, May 18, 2019–Wednesday, May 29, 2019 Opening Reception: Friday, May 17, 2019, 7 p.m.

After featuring Jim Thorell’s work in the group show AFTERMATH in the Summer of 2018, as well as at art fairs in Berlin, Dusseldorf and Los Angeles, SETAREH GALLERY is delighted to host his first solo show at our Hohe Straße exhibition space with a captivating new body of work.

Thorell’s visual worlds question the perceptible reality and open up references to symbolism and the formal qualities of early 20th century painting, which he translates into his very own pictorial language.

The show’s title Mykorrhiza refers to a biological phenomenon, which describes a symbiotic interchange between mushrooms and plants. The term brings together the Greek words for mykós (fungus) and riza (root) and describes those tiny threads that are interconnected in a highly complex, collaborative underground web, linking various different living organisms with one another.

Jim Thorell was born in 1981 in Stockholm where he lives and works. He studied at universities and art schools in Finland, Japan, Vietnam and Austria and was awarded a Master of Fine Arts from Valand Academy in Gothenburg in 2010. Thorell’s work has been shown at museums and galleries in Malmö, Stockholm, Berlin, London and New York City
