SETAREH GALLERY is showcasing new paintings by the artist Gregor Gleiwitz, introducing around 20 new works in a comprehensive presentation in the Königsallee gallery space. This selection of works draws attention to Gleiwitz‘s most recent artistic development.

The title „Monstera“ leads us mentally into a jungle. „Monstera Deliciosa“ is not a figure, not a monster, but a houseplant that is well known in everyday life, whose leaves and growth, as well as its origin from a tropical environment, enable a comparison to be made with the differently interwoven lines in the artist‘s pictures. The second part of the title, „I’m Sitting on the Edge of my Eye“, describes an anecdote from Gleiwitz‘s young years as a painter, when he tried, in the style of the Surrealists, to get to his unconscious, his inner-being, with the help of a trick in order to be able to paint this dream picture. So he found himself sitting on the edge of his eye, like sitting on a windowsill, from where he could look at his outside world, but at the same time also inwards, into his world of thoughts and dreams.

The exhibition enables a deep descent into the field of art history: beginning with the techniques and automatisms of Surrealism, the works move past abstraction and quasi-figurative levels of meaning. These are peculiar worlds of color, whose soft, warm internal aura reminds one of color field painting, and that inturn are broken by highly expressive lines.

Starting in autumn, Gregor Gleiwitz (b. 1977) will be exhibiting a comprehensive presentation of his work in numerous museums, including Kunstmuseum Bonn, Museum Wiesbaden and Museum Gunzenhauser of the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz with the show „Jetzt! Young Painting in Germany“. His works havealso been displayed in L.A., Copenhagen, Milan, Chongqing, Berlin, London and in the houses ACME L.A.,Bregenzer Kunstverein, Haus Bethanien, Badischer Kunstverein or in the Düsseldorf Parkhaus and most recently in the Setareh Gallery in 2016. He lives and works in Berlin and graduated as a master student at the Kunstakademie Münster in 2007.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue with essays by Dr. Christoph Schreier, curator and deputy director of the Kunstmuseum Bonn, and by Maria Wildeis, head of exhibitions at SETAREH GALLERY.
