Our presentation for Paris Photo features a range of approaches which use photography to consider photography itself with the works by Philipp Goldbach, Peter Miller, Sebastian Riemer, Janice Guy and Ellen Carey.

Philipp Goldbach’s new photogram works created in dialogue with the Centre Pompidou, explore the ideas of Lucio Fontana.

Peter Miller's playful and lighthearted ‘analog turn’ has analytic intent. 'The First Time I…' monuments are philosophically doubled in symmetrical Rorschaches. In 'Nice Bokeh', the bouquet is a digital distortion, an embodiment of process and its potential for realizing sentiment.

Sebastian Riemer shrinks stock images till unrecognisable, to then enlarge and push the distortion with global effects. These abstractions are a gestural play to realise seductive effects.

The work of Janice Guy, self-portraits, is born out of the action of photography. Evolved through her studies at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in the1970s, for Guy, the action of photographing becomes a subject in itself. Compositionally complex and shot in the reflective surfaces of domestic spaces, the camera and the artist are essentially collaborative subjects in these pictures.

Ellen Carey’s experiments emphasize color. Joyful feelings of creativity reflect a discipline, revisiting traditional terms, like color processing, in new ways. Color is subject and object, material with meaning, process within the final work.
