Skarstedt London is delighted to announce In Homage, an exhibition of seminal artworks by modern and contemporary masters, including Francis Bacon, George Condo, Martin Kippenberger, Sigmar Polke, Richard Prince and Andy Warhol. Throughout art history, artists have been inspired by their illustrious predecessors. In Homage will explore how artists have been influenced by the creativity of other artists in their choice of subject matter and their stylistic approach. Going beyond a direct comparison of imagery in the artists’ references to past masters, In Homage will look at the affinity between artists and their shared mastery of the painterly process. Presenting a dialogue across generations, the exhibition will include exemplary works by Francis Bacon, George Condo, Martin Kippenberger, Sigmar Polke, Richard Prince and Andy Warhol among others, with paintings referencing masterpieces by Velázquez, Picasso, Baselitz, Ernst, Goya and de Chirico. On display will be Francis Bacon’s Study for a Pope III, 1961; last exhibited in the U.K. at the Tate Gallery in 1962, as part of the artist’s first major retrospective. This painting will be shown in London for the first time in 52 years. Skarstedt opened its 3rd space in Chelsea, New York, on May 8th 2014 with the exhibition Yves Klein and Andy Warhol: Fire Paintings and Oxidation Paintings.
