A puzzling game ... labyrinthic... images mirroring other images ... drifting from one to another ... zig zagging back and forth ... colours, shades, lines, reflections, movements, fragmentations and shapes. Photographs tell stories linked to other stories.
TAG Fine Arts is proud to present Haecceity Series 2009 by Belgian photographer Valery Lippens, which opens to coincide with the Islington London Art Fair, 2010 (12-17 January).
Born into a family of photographers, Lippens has traveled extensively and exhibited in a number of countries. Lippens’ images are transformative, drawing out the subtleties and significances of the everyday or mundane.
Haecceity Series presents two of London’s best-known stations – St Pancras International and Liverpool Street – in an entirely new way. Questioning the potential of individual photographs to capture the essence of these busy public hubs, Lippens has explored the world of multiple frames. Dozens of images, all depicting commuters from above, are brought together to form complex composite grids. The resulting works provide the viewer with new ways of navigating and experiencing the subject. It is tempting to ‘read’ the images in their chronological order, but impossible to discern a continuous narrative. The works form a collection of lines, shapes, shadows and colours that interlock and merge, creating a sense of crowded motion and changing space. Unexpected relationships emerge between the frames that pull the eye across the grid in new and fluctuating directions. Ultimately we select our own narratives out of a medley of visual information, taking in the works of art in the same flickering, scanning way that we take in the modern world itself.
