Alfred Aaron Wolmark, the British Post-Impressionist painter, was born in Warsaw on 28th December 1877. His family came to London when he was six years old and, having shown a precocious talent for painting, at the age of eighteen he entered the Royal Academy School of Art. There he won a silver medal and in 1901 he made his exhibiting debut at the Royal Academy, later exhibiting widely throughout England and Europe, and in 1905 he held his first one-man show at the Bruton Galleries. He lived and worked in Brittany between 1910-1912 and stayed in New York for some time during the ‘Great War’. He was a prominent member of the Jewish immigrant community in London, painting many dark and evocative portraits of his family and friends. He also executed many still lifes and a number of futuristic works. He died in London on 6th January 1961. Examples of his works are in many leading public collections, including the Tate Gallery. There are also a series of paintings by him of Shakespearian characters in the theatre museum at Stratford on Avon.
