Having read texts by Leonardo da Vinci, Gregory Bateson, and Emily Dickinson throughout the pandemic, Simão, in her latest works, explores cosmological potential latent in nature. Combining rich hues of contrasting color, Simão’s works emit light from within while exploring pictorial themes such as the closing of a theater curtain, the arrival of a boat on shore, and the rising of the moon. Sinuous brushstrokes inspired by the unpredictable twists and turns of classical music imbue her paintings and preparatory works on paper with a joyful harmony that permeates the viewer’s psyche.
