The first New York exhibition of paintings by Tom Levine will be held from April 2 through May 3, 2003 at the Joan Washburn Gallery. Since 1985, Levine¹s work has been seen frequently in solo exhibitions in Europe, where the artist has spent considerable time in both Germany and France. Paintings, drawings and prints by Tom Levine are represented in museum collections both in Europe and this country.

A catalogue with five color reproductions will accompany the exhibition including an introduction by the writer and curator, Raymond Foye. An excerpt from the text by Raymond Foye follows: Drawing is the foundation of Levine¹s art. His painting is informed by the notational aspect of that activity, as well as by the tactile receptivity of work on paper. Levine assiduously keeps a sketchbook, a practice that is responsible for much of the freshness of perception found in these paintings; it may be a quality of light glimpsed in a sunset, patterns of shadows in a cityscape, or more often an idea for a sequence of technical procedures.
