Wessel + O’Connor Fine Art will celebrate it’s 25th Anniversary with an exhibition of 25 works by artists from the gallery: Mike Bidlo, Bruce of Los Angeles, Marina Cappelletto, Craig Coleman,
John Dugdale, Luis Frangella, Jim French David Halliday Brandon Herman, Horst P. Horst, David Levinthal, Blake Little, George Platt Lynes, Robert Mapplethorpe, Donald Moffett, Eadweard Muybridge, Walter Robinson, Howard Roffman, Adam Rolston, Bruce Sargeant, Andres Serrano, Luke Smalley, Iké Udé, Wilhelm von Gloeden, and Rhonda Zwillinger.
In October 1985, John Wessel and Billy O’Connor opened their first Gallery on Via di Ripetta in the historic center of Rome. After more than 140 exhibitions in Italy, New York, and currently Lambertville, New Jersey, the Gallery is proud to present “25 Years / 25 Works.”
The exhibition features iconic works from shows of the last quarter century and highlights the diverse range of genres promoted by the Gallery, including photography, paintings, prints, and sculpture. Among the artists included are: Mike Bidlo, who emerged from the art scene in the 1980s East Village at the same time as the opening of the gallery, and is here represented by one of his Warhol “appropriationism” screen-print paintings of Jackie Onasiss. John Dugdale, a master of antique photographic processes, will be in the show with his famous cyanotype images of still lifes, portraits, and landscapes. George Platt Lynes, well known for his work with the ballet and fashion, is equally respected for his extensive nude images of the male body, and whose work served as a historic inspiration for the Gallery’s many exhibitions of male image art, past and present. Donald Moffett, one of several Gallery activist artists producing political and AIDS-related work , is represented by one of his thought provoking and confrontational 1990s light boxes “You, You, You.” Rhonda Zwillinger, another of the renowned East Village artists, who inaugurated the Gallery’s Rome venue, is well known for encrusting objects such as shoes, furniture, and candelabras, with elaborate beading. Her “Toute Suite,” an entire bejeweled baby-grand piano, her largest, single endeavor, will be on view for the first time in 15 years.
