White Cube is pleased to announce a major exhibition of new paintings by Michael Armitage, which follows the artist’s first exhibition in Switzerland at Kunsthalle Basel. Produced over the past three years, a new body of work by the Nairobi-born artist draws upon what Elena Filipovic, Director of Kunsthalle Basel, refers to as ‘wildly diverse themes each circulating between past and present, historical fact and conjured fiction.’ The results are haunting, layered figurative paintings in which the artist imbues scenes with a dreamlike, unearthly glow, reflecting, as he states, upon ‘the tension created by the resistance of the surface to the painted mark’.
In dialogue with these paintings, several ceramic sculptures by Senegalese artist Seyni Awa Camara will run through the exhibition, which model clay to conjure the world as the artist sees it, through a process that is equally attentive to the natural environs of the land and stories, events and feelings that have been dreamt and revealed.
