Xavier Hufkens is pleased to announce a new exhibition by the influential American artist Paul McCarthy (b. 1945, Salt Lake City) known for his multidisciplinary anarchic oeuvre.
Since the late 1960's/early-1970s, McCarthy has mixed high and low culture, provoking an analysis of society's most fundamental and sacrosanct beliefs. At the gallery's St-Georges location, the artist will present work in different media, including installations and a video work that are part of his ongoing Coach Stage Stage Coach (CSSC) project, alongside new large-scale paintings and works on paper. Throughout the first floor, confrontational installations address the archetypal American narrative of the Western, probing subversive themes such as sexual violence, psychosocial breakdown and mortality.
