Description
Judging from the excemination by Suzanne Leamers, Curator of Early Netherlandish Painting att (RKD) Netherlands Institut for Art History, the painting is by Flemish artist from the third quarter of 16th century and It is most likely that the artist drew inspiration from prints by Albrecht Dürer who's printmaking was used by artists as exempel for their compositions. Certain elements, particulary the poses of the figures, occur in a comparable fasion in the prints.

_Agony_in_the_Garden_%28No._2%29_-_WGA7297.jpg
This composition depicts Christ praying in the Garden of Gethsemane, immediately before his arrest. After the Last Supper, Christ went to the Mount of Olives, accompanied by his disciples. (Matthew: ch. 26 v. 37; Mark: ch. 14 v. 33) Three of his disciples, Peter, James and John, went with him to the Garden of Gethsemane, located at the base of the Mount, but then they left him and he prayed alone. Here Christ is seen in the middle of the composition on a slight rise on the ground. His three disciples sleep in the foreground, contrary to Christ's orders. A chalice appears to the upper right of Christ, on the outcrop of the rock, which symbolises the chalice of fate, while in the background a group led by Judas appears, to arrest Christ. The darkening sky presents a strange contrast between dark clouds above and bright sunsets below, alluding to Christ's suffering and the tragedy to come.
