The motif of the group of actors is one of the motifs that August Sander commissioned for the stage in the 1920s and 1930s. It was probably not published during Sander's lifetime. August Sander had already created photographs in the context of theater, music and dance performances during his time in Linz between 1901 and 1909. A task that he retained during his time in Cologne. The print was presumably part of a thematic and prestigious portfolio due to the fact that it is mounted on cardboard usually used for Sander's portfolios and is also provided with a protective film. It was described there as follows: .,A group of actors from the revue "Groß Köln". Groß-Köln" or "Groß-Cöln" is the name of the first large popular variety theater in Cologne. It opened in 1912 and was destroyed during the Second World War (see Jürgen Müller: Willkommen, Bienvenue, Welcome... ", Poli_sche Revue-KabareG- Varieté in Cologne 1928-1938, Cologne, 2008, p. 307). August Sander may have made contact with the variety theater through the architect Hans Heinz Lüttgen, with whom he was closely acquainted through the "Cologne Progressives" group. According to Wikipedia, Lüttgen took over the conversion of the theater and "on New Year's Day 1932, the premiere of the anniversary revue for Willi Ostermann Vum Billa zum Zilla by Hans Jonen and Leo Renner, directed by the new operators Ludwig and Hans Herbert Blatzheim, was presented for the reopening." (Wikipedia, as of July 2019). A dating to 1932 would be possible based on this. The large-format original glass negatives on which the print is based can be found in the August Sander Archive.

Description
The photographic print, recto, shows an elaboration in warm brown "black and white" tones known for the work of August Sander. The surface is matt-glossy and shows retouching and a slight elevation at the bottom right. The size of the enlargement: 27.8 x 23.0 cm. The edges of the image have been framed with a black ink border. In the lower left corner there is a round embossing stamp, frequently used by August Sander with the inscription "August Sander/ Köln/ Lindenthal".Judging by its appearance, the portfolio print was probably made in the 1930s.
