Description
Union, Jack! refers to the gathering together of works by expatriate artists living in London for the 1962 Young Commonwealth Artists exhibition. It was placed in London Underground stations where waiting commuters continued to colour in the flag with their red and blue pens.
It won the poster category at the first British Design & Art Directors Professional Awards ceremony opened by Lord Snowdon at the London Hilton in 1963. In 2002 the Victoria & Albert Museum presented a retrospective which celebrated forty years of the D&AD Awards. Alan Fletcher wrote in the accompanying publication, ‘His modified Union Jack, its lineaments only partially coloured in with crayon, captured the emerging spirit of the sixties counter-culture; before long, the previously sacrosanct British flag would be hijacked and subverted by virtually every faction of that culture…’
In conversation with Anthony Byrt for Frieze in 2012, Apple noted that he “didn’t actually work in the London advertising industry. The things I was doing were closer to an art context; works like Homonym [1963] in which I photographed two brands together that were completely different but had similar names: Batchelor’s Peas and Bachelor Cigarettes.”
