Description
Billy Apple® is registered in eight classes, including Class 31 (fresh fruit). Between 2001 and 2007, the artist worked with horticulturalists and apple growers to produce a new apple cultivar called a ‘Billy Apple’. This cast is one of several the artist selected, cast, painted and signed or inscribed with his logo to serve as a 3-D representation of the new apple. Though a cultivar was developed and grown on several trees in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand, it did not go into commercial production. Since this project stalled, the artist has collaborated with Saatchi & Saatchi to produce a dry (green) and a medium (red) cider using Granny Smith and Fuji apples in proportions that conform to the golden ratio. Apple designed the packaging for this Billy Apple Cider, and it has been sold in selected supermarkets throughout New Zealand since 2015.
