Description
Certificate of authenticity issued by the Chu Teh-Chun Foundation on April 19th 2022.
A major figure in abstract landscape painting, Chu Teh-Chun (1920-2014) has never ceased to link Chinese and Western sensibilities. Composition bleue translates with poetry and vitality the double culture of the painter and marks his affirmation - lasting - on the international artistic scene.
In 1969, Chu Teh Chun's works were the subject of an important retrospective at the Sao Paulo Biennial in Brazil. The exhibition marked the beginning of a true international recognition and coincided with the full expression of his singular style, marked by both traditional Chinese art, from the paintings of Fan Kuan to calligraphy, and by European abstract art - in particular Nicolas de Staël, whose works he discovered in Paris in 1956. The beginning of the 1970s was a period of great success for Chu Teh Chun, where the purity of gesture, the care of composition and the exploration of colors reached their fullness, and Blue Composition is the manifestation of this.
But, beyond the artistic and personal context in which our painting is set, it is the poetry that strikes first. Indeed, the rigor of tradition and the irresistible breath of freedom are mixed together in one movement, intimacy and cosmos, observation of nature and knowledge of the history of art. On a midnight blue background from which emerge jade green scrolls are arranged brushed white flats and sparing red spots that give rhythm to this metaphysical landscape. As Chu Teh Chun himself stated during his induction speech at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1999, "in nature I hear the voice of the universe, the voice of humanity, and the voices of the East and the West."
